Trial Parking Changes on Abbotsford

There has been a recurring traffic issue in the 600 block of Abbotsford when there are cars staged in the loading zone on the west side of the street and cars parked in the 60 minute zone on the east side, for the after school pick-up. Additionally, after 4 PM when there are school functions, cars can legally park in the loading zone on the west side and on the east side in the 60 minute zone which results in this same congested situation. Both of these situations restrict this block to one lane of traffic making it difficult to navigate through and difficult for residents living on this block to exit their driveways safely. Additionally, the Police Department has observed pedestrian safety concerns with children running across Abbotsford in 600 block after school, in this congested area, to their parent parked on the east side in the 60 minute zone. The Police Department conducted a parking survey and have explored options to address these issues.

The Public Safety Committee met in May to review traffic flow and pedestrian safety in the 600 block of Abbotsford and agreed to conduct a trial in an attempt to improve traffic and pedestrian safety. The trial parking changes outlined are designed to get all parked cars onto the west side of the street in the 500 and 600 block of Abbotsford. The hope is that this change will allow two-way traffic flow and eliminate any child pick-up area on the east side of the roadway. The following changes to the parking restrictions will be made as a trial to begin in August 2019 with a follow up meeting over winter break to evaluate the effectiveness of the changes:

Change the east side of the 600 block of Abbotsford to No Standing or Parking except Saturday and Sunday.
Change the west side of the 600 block of Abbotsford to 90 Minute Parking 8:00 am to 5:00 pm School Days.
Expand the Loading Zone in the 500 block of Abbotsford.
Change the No Parking on the east side of Abbotsford in the 500 block to No Standing or Parking Anytime.
