Make Your Home a Hard Target

Sent: November 2, 2018

A crime pattern where offenders are looking for unlocked vehicles to burglarize or steal continues to occur on the North Shore.  Offenders are attracted to the North Shore because crimes of opportunity exist in safe areas.  We need your help to eliminate crimes of opportunity and to call 911 if you see any suspicious behavior.  These simple measures may help deter a criminal from targeting you!

VEHICLE SECURITY TIPS:

  • Always lock your vehicles.
  • Remove the keys and garage door opener - even when parked in your driveway.
  • Never leave valuable property within your vehicle.

HOME SECURITY TIPS:
  • Make sure you have sturdy metal or solid wood doors at all entries into your home and that sliding glass and similar doors are properly secured.
  • Make sure every external door has a sturdy, well-installed dead bolt lock.
  • Instead of hiding keys around the outside of your home, store an extra key at the Police Department or with a neighbor.
  • Thieves hate bright lights. Install outside lights and keep them on or motion activated at night.
  • Prune back shrubbery so it doesn't hide doors or windows.
  • If you travel, create the illusion that you're at home by getting some timers that will turn lights on and off in different areas of your house throughout the evening. Lights burning 24 hours a day signal an empty house.  Call the Police Department and add your home to the Vacant House Watch.
  • Leave shades, blinds, and curtains in normal positions.
  • Don't let your mail pile up! Call the post office to stop delivery or have a neighbor pick it up.
  • Consider installing a security alarm system; if you already have one — be sure to use it.
  • Request a free home security inspection from the Police Department.
