Attempted Armed Robbery I Car Jacking
 

The Wilmette Police Department is investigating an attempted armed robbery / car jacking that occurred Monday evening, August 15th at 8:50pm. The incident occurred in a residential driveway in the 400 block of Sandy Lane.

In the incident a 30 year old woman had just pulled into her driveway when she was confronted by two offenders who pointed a gun at her and threatened to shoot if she did not hand over her purse and keys to her vehicle. The victim began screaming and the offenders fled. The offenders were described as two African American males in their mid to late teens wearing ski masks and armed with a handgun.

The offenders fled to a waiting vehicle, a silver or white Toyota Camry which sped eastbound on Wilmette Ave from Sandy.

The Wilmette Police issued a crime alert on Friday August 12th, warning residents to be alert for this pattern. Crews that the Wilmette Police Department have identified and arrested in connection with auto thefts and auto burglaries in the Village have morphed into committing street robberies and car-jackings.
Similar robberies have occurred in some nearby suburbs over the last few weeks.

We ask that you be vigilant around shopping centers and gas stations in the late evening hours- particularly 8pm to 11pm and when going into or out of your home in the late evening hours.

If you are confronted - do not resist - contact the police as soon as it is safe to do so. Please report suspicious persons or vehicles that you may observe in the area.
