Message from the Chief of Police

Sent: June 4, 2020

When video footage surfaced showing the death of George Floyd, myself and fellow members of the Kenilworth Police Department were as horrified as others around the world.  Every Police Officer I have spoken with was horrified.  A man lost his life needlessly and unjustifiably.  These brutal actions also tarnished the image of the honest, hard-working, Police Officers who got into this profession to help all people, no matter their race, color, religion or sexual orientation.

The Kenilworth Police Department signed the Shared Principles developed by the NAACP and Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police in 2018.  Many Police Departments in Illinois have signed the Shared Principles so far.  It’s not just words on paper, it is truly our desire to hold ourselves accountable to each and every one of those principles.  These Shared Principles are posted to the door leading into the Patrol Office at the Police Department and has been since it was signed in 2018.

Our officers are trained in civil rights, constitutional & proper use of law enforcement authority, cultural competency, human rights, and procedural justice.  Implicit bias and racial and ethnic sensitivity are an important part of this training.  At the Kenilworth Police Department we require that these topics are covered in training on an annual basis by all of our Police Officers.

I’m proud to be working for a Police Department where I can trust that each and every Police Officer will treat everyone with dignity, respect and with utmost professionalism.  I know many people in the Kenilworth community know this already about their Police Department but during these difficult times for all of us, I felt the need to express this clearly and without reservation to everyone.

Best Regards,

David Miller
